The first arrived before dawn on March 29, then another and then another. By March 31, we had 3 newborn Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. What a treat! This endangered zebra species is  down to less than 4,000 in the world.

All 3 are little males. The mothers keep the foal away from the other zebra for the first couple of hours so the foals can imprint with their mother’s strip pattern. For the first 3 days, mom and babies were a little aloof to the others and kept their foals away from the herd.

Nearly a month old now, they are interacting and play fighting with each other, but still never far from their mother’s side. With the warm weather we are having this week, they are usually found stretched out on their side in the sun.
