From March thru July 17, we have had 15 animals born at B Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, CA. We have had 5 Sable.. all boys. In early July we had 3 Roan born, 2 females and 1 male. But the ones that everyone likes to see are the zebra. We welcomed 2 Hartmann’s Mountain zebra males - Zipper and Doobi as well as 2 female and 1 male Grevy foal. We will not be breeding next year, so make sure you visit to see the newborns.

As most of you know, Kenya is going through the worst drought in 60 years. A projected 10 million people are expected to die. Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia are the home for the critically endangered Grevy’s Zebra. A recent study said that there were only an estimated 700 of these beautiful zebra left in the wild. We are expecting 3 Grevy’s Zebra to foal by the end of August which means we will have close to 1% of the population of Grevy’s at B Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, CA. That is exciting, but also sad.

Mable, our original Sable Antelope, had a female calf. One of the perks when guests stay at B Bryan Preserve, is that they get to name any babies that are born while they are vacationing. We had a wonderful family staying for spring break. Sarah got the honor of naming this little sable and after much thought, Emma is the name.

Sarah not only got to name the baby, but she actually witnessed the birth and helped with the tagging and weighing. Emma weighed in at a healthy 34 lbs!!!! It is unusual for guests to be able to actually get close or pet one of our animals. This was a rare occasion. Remember, we are NOT a petting zoo.

Thanks Sarah for being such a big help. Come back and visit your new friend.

Along with Sable Antelope, we were also amazed to find an early arrival one morning. Sarah had a beautiful foal on April 21. She is one of several critically endangered Grevy’s Zebras that we are trying to breed in captivity to sustain the species. There are less than 2,000 of these beautiful zebra species left in the world.

We are expecting 2 more of these great animals this year at B Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, CA. A great way to spend a vacation in Northern California, Mendocino County.

The first arrived before dawn on March 29, then another and then another. By March 31, we had 3 newborn Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. What a treat! This endangered zebra species is down to less than 4,000 in the world.

All 3 are little males. The mothers keep the foal away from the other zebra for the first couple of hours so the foals can imprint with their mother’s strip pattern. For the first 3 days, mom and babies were a little aloof to the others and kept their foals away from the herd.

Nearly a month old now, they are interacting and play fighting with each other, but still never far from their mother’s side. With the warm weather we are having this week, they are usually found stretched out on their side in the sun.
