Sable Antelope

 
  • The sable antelope is mildly sexually dimorphic with the males and females looking only slightly different. Calves are born all the same color, a light sandy brown. As they get older, males can get a very dark brown, almost black. Females have a few different shades of brown, generally lighter than the males. They live in herds led by a dominant female,graze on grasses and foliage, and use their horns for defense. A very aggressive animal.

  • Size: ~4 feet tall at the shoulder. Weight: 500 - 600 pounds

  • Features: Bold facial markings. Both sexes have horns while the males grow about 5feet longer and curve backwards. Females horns are not quite as long and don’t curve as much.

  • Conservation Status: Least Concern but declining. Estimated population is around 60,000.

  • Range: Eastern Africa
