Sable Antelope
The sable antelope is mildly sexually dimorphic with the males and females looking only slightly different. Calves are born all the same color, a light sandy brown. As they get older, males can get a very dark brown, almost black. Females have a few different shades of brown, generally lighter than the males. They live in herds led by a dominant female,graze on grasses and foliage, and use their horns for defense. A very aggressive animal.
Size: ~4 feet tall at the shoulder. Weight: 500 - 600 pounds
Features: Bold facial markings. Both sexes have horns while the males grow about 5feet longer and curve backwards. Females horns are not quite as long and don’t curve as much.
Conservation Status: Least Concern but declining. Estimated population is around 60,000.
