Two of the giraffe at B Bryan Preserve, Jagger and Jimmy, are experts at blood draws and have gone the extra mile to become voluntary plasma donors!
Animal care staff have worked consistently with them to create a positive environment with their favorite snacks, where they allow our veterinarian to draw blood consistently for 10 minutes into a plasma bag. This bag is then spun down, frozen, and stored at the preserve. It’s ready at any time to be overnight shipped to another facility if they have a struggling newborn giraffe calf in need of a transfusion.
