Cape Buffalo
The Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a massive, highly social bovine native to sub-Saharan Africa. Famous for their formidable horns, these powerful grazers are members of the revered "Big Five" safari animals and are notorious for their unpredictable and aggressive temperament when threatened. Because of their power and disposition, African buffalo are considered the most dangerous game species in Africa and are nicknamed the “black death.”
Size: about 5 ft tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds
Features:Both males and females have large curved horns. The males’ meet in the middle of their head forming a “boss”
Conservation Status: Least Concern but declining. Current populations are estimated at around 400,000 mature individuals.
Range (map from 2008): Its primary distribution stretches through Eastern and Southern Africa, specifically in countries like South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
